be careful of why
My step-mom tends to ask me questions that she doesn’t really want to hear the answer to. Questions like, “what’s wrong with drinking cows milk?” I explain a bit about how the animals are treated and the chemicals they receive and a few other charming things about the life of a dairy cow. About this point she (without fail) says, “oh gross! I don’t want to think about it.” Which is fine by me. I’m not preachy when it comes to being a vegetarian. There is a place for that and groups like PeTA are necessary to spread the information around and be a little more radical and sensationalist to counter all of the “milk is good for you” propaganda. I would much rather just say, “no thank you,” when offered jerky or a glass of milk, but when pressed I will tell you all about it.
My in-laws don’t generally ask us why. They have owned cows and know exactly what goes on. Maybe not on the large corporate scale, but even at the small farm level you have many of the same procedures. You still have to raise an animal and then shoot it while your children are in hysterics behind you. They tease us. They always offer us some of their steak. But they have yet to ask us why we don’t eat meat.
In case you are wondering why the posts have slowed down so much, not only am I trying to bring the Tashi Lhunpo monks to town, I’m also trying to learn PHP so that I can use Moveable Type as the new medium for posting. Check out what I’ve got so far.

As a member of the same family as Herr Tom, I tend
to think that the reason that our extended family
still drinks milk is its use as a mixer. Don’t get
me wrong, this family as a whole has some good points
, but when your family reunions are registered
as high volume sales days at the local liquor store,
how can someone really understand that “real milk”
has detrimental effects on the body. Is it really
that hard of a concept to grasp that during the
chernoyble incident(and yes, that is most likely a
spelling error), we were all told not to drink the
milk from Eastern Washington? That incident was half
a world away, imagine what BGH ingected into the
cow, or pestacides that were applied to the grass
the cow was consuming, might do to a human being?
I am a coffee drinker, and I live on the western side
of washington st., and now, I just say “Chai please”
or, strike me dead because I used to make fun of my
mother for this, “Soy please”.
Good point about the family liquor consumption, but not so sure it applies to this particular post.
One thing about being a veggie — I now have to eat most of my words (they are completely meat-free) from high school. I was the carnivore. The guy who always made fun of the veggies. The guy who would volunteer to run the grill at barbeques. Funny how tables turn as years pass.
