toolbench, then toolbox

I’ve been consumed by life. I am so amazingly caught up in the whirlwind that is work, food, family, projects, sleep that I barely have time to think about it let alone write about it. Actually I do spent quite a bit of time thinking about writing about it.

At any rate, I’ve not been able to make the time to put fingers to keyboard. I’ve been working on this toolbox for work. The theory is that it will save me a great deal of time and energy because I’m currently forced to make about three trips to each room I go to hauling tools from one to the other. My drill, extension cord, screws, shims, clamps, stud finder, screwdriver, drill bits, pencil, marker, any jigs, the jig saw, framing square, sometimes silicone and various caulk and acetone to clean the tops. The list goes on depending on the job.

I could spend a great deal of time describing to you what the toolbox will and will not be. It’s not important. I’ll post a picture of the completed deal.

The point is that it has really taken over all of my time because now I need to setup the “shop” in our basement/garage. It’s very small and I don’t have many power tools. Just a bench and some hand tools. It’s nice to work at home in a quiet, slower way. I could easily make all the cuts in five minutes on a table saw, but it’s peaceful and ancient this way. No fine particle board sawdust lingering in the air like at work. Just large, heavy shavings which fall directly on the floor.

But before I can make the toolbox I have to make saw horses and then a router table (one power tool that does things I couldn’t do by hand). The router table will sit on the saw horses, the saw horses will be collapsable so they can hide easily when not in use. All of this takes time. Meanwhile I’m still packing tools from room to room wishing I had a better way to carry them.
